On Being a Student

An ex-president of this institution, when it was a college with an enrollment of several thousand, was asked how many students the school had. He quipped "Oh, perhaps a dozen." He was making a joke which is as old as the hills. The president of a large corporation used it when he was asked by a reporter (during a strike) how many workers there were in his plant. One of my junior-high teachers used to remind us that to be a student meant more than merely being a pupil .

Times change. The definition of "student" once was "one who studies something". Today it can mean merely "one who attends a school, college or university". This modern definition doesn't even suggest that the person does more than "attend". College and university professors still use the first definition, and schools have ways (such as requirements, exams and grades) to attempt to ensure that those who attend will also study and learn something.

So what distinguishes a student? What makes the student stand out from the rest of the class? The four As : attitude, academic skills, awareness, and accomplishment, certainly are a large part of it, and a student who has them will be very likely to earn As:

  1. Attitude is primarily a genuine desire to learn, and the willingness to do hard intellectual work to achieve understanding. It is also shown by how well you apply yourself even to subjects in which you have little interest, and how much you can achieve even when a professor's style isn't to your liking.
  2. Academic skills include ability to read with comprehension, intelligent use of resources (including library resources), logical and mathematical skills, efficient study habits, and the ability to communicate clearly and fluently in speaking and writing.
  3. Awareness of what's going on in the world around you, and the habit of intelligently relating it to your academic courses. For example, when taking a course in political science, you should relate what you are learning in class to what's happening on the national and world political scene. When taking a science course, you should relate scientific principles to phenomena you observe in everyday life, and go out of your way to find applications and examples of science in the real world.

Accomplishment is demonstrated by successful application of understanding. The evidence of that is:

  •  Correct and confident application of what you've learned to new problems and challenges,
  •  clear and effective communication of your understanding through speaking and writing, and
  •  possession of a base of information, skills and understanding sufficient to allow you to continue your education outside of the classroom, throughout your life.

All of these add up to a fifth A: ability , a word frequently used above. The goal of education is to achieve the ability to apply one's knowledge in new, creative, and correct ways. Abilities are not entirely innate; some are achievable through dedicated and focused effort.

Other symptoms and qualities of a good student include:

  1.  Self-discipline . The successful student has learned to budget time, and use it efficiently, and will do the things that need to be done, when they must be done, whether or not one feels like it at the time.
  2.  Initiative . In short: doing things without being told. The student doesn't wait for assignments to read ahead in the textbook, or to seek out and study related books to gain understanding. The good student does more problems or exercises than assigned, and does them even when none are assigned. The good student working in the laboratory does not merely follow instructions (though that is an important skill) but looks for opportunities to discover new things, try new things, or find better methods. When an opportunity arises to do a project outside of class, the good student jumps at the chance and doesn't even ask whether it will earn extra credit.
  3. Breadth of interests . College provides a great opportunity to broaden your interests and explore new things. You may never again have available to you such a convenient and comprehensive library, such diverse and inexpensive cultural events and academic activities. Much education can occur outside of class, if you seek it. But if you confine yourself to the things you've always done, avoiding anything new and unfamiliar, you will have squandered a valuable opportunity.
  4. An open mind is a mind receptive to examination of new ideas and facts. Having an open mind does not mean that one jumps on the bandwagon of every new fad. A better characterization of an open mind is one which is willing to dispassionately and rationally analyze new ideas, weighing them objectively against established knowledge and the facts at hand.
  5.  A critical habit of mind . Education is more than the acquisition of information. It includes the ability to acquire new information, to critically evaluate that information, and to correctly and effectively use it. With so many information sources at our disposal in this computer age we are awash in information, and in danger of information overload. But much of that information is fraudulent, worthless, incomplete, or just plain wrong. It has always been so. Probably 95% of the books in any library could be lost with no harm to human knowledge. But it's not easy to determine just which books are worth keeping. We are assaulted through every medium by folks trying to sell us something (with impressive claims of its value), to persuade us to accept some political or social idea, to convert us to some religion or philosophy, or to convince us of the value of some medical panacea. Most of this is humbug. One of the values of a good education is the ability to see through false and unfounded claims and outright deceptions. By this criterion, education has largely been a failure, for many people who have college degrees are still suckers for the snake-oil and perpetual-motion-machine peddlers.
  6.  Perceptiveness . The more you learn, the more perceptive you become. You can, as necessary, "read between the lines." You no longer need everything spelled out; you can fill in missing details. You aren't dependent on being shown; you can puzzle things out for yourself. You perceive quickly what a writer or speaker means, without misinterpreting. You learn to seek the intended meaning of what you read or hear rather than trying to impose your own preconceived meaning. You can see through complexity to the heart of a matter. You are able to distinguish the important from the trivial in a serious discussion.
  7.  Objectivity . Most of us begin our education with an "egocentric" view, expecting everything to have some relevance to our needs or desires. We even impose such interpretations on things we learn, and avoid learning some things because they don't seem important at the time . Education can broaden that view, encouraging us to set our egos aside and objectively evaluate facts and interpretations. We find out that mere unsupported personal opinions have no value in an academic discussion. We learn to recognize the validity of facts and ideas which we may not like. We learn that other people and other cultures interpret things differently, and that fact is not a-priori evidence that they are wrong. We learn that the world does not revolve around us, and the universe cares not one bit whether we exist, or what we do. Education can give us humility.
  8. Humility . However much one knows, one must realize there's a lot more to be learned, and that some of what one `knows' may turn out to be wrong. For this reason intellectual arrogance is unbecoming an educated person. Knowing lots of things is good, but knowing the limitations of one's knowledge is essential to using it properly. Many of the classic errors of history were made by people over-confidently going beyond what they knew and understood.

Work to be educated, not merely trained.

The Death of Architecture

Assalamualaikum
(waalaikumusalam)

This is the first of maybe many more to come. This is a notation of a student point of view, of which experience may not be much but a story yet to be noted as a point of view, not more and nothing less. An architecture student has yet to be tested for the ability to discuss philosophy as he might not be good enough.

We might as well know that the world we live in judges things a lot. In many ways possible, never to accept, always rejecting the new ideas, way too comfortable living in the past, recognizing the present by yesterday and the future will always be the history. But of all this there are some countries, that offer free education, the higher ups who pay taxes, people who eats the things they grow, a newspaper that discuss instead of telling how people what to think.

Of all that and you wonder what does that have anything to do with architecture? A friend of mine defines architecture as the significant to everything that we do. What else can it be in the form of art? An art will always be valued by the very significant of it. But as we all know that architecture is the art and science of buildings or, so to say the art of playing with form, space, and order. What is architecture exactly? If art is nothing but significant, and science on the other hand, is the truth of everything that is happening around us, what does both combined mean? The significance of everything that is true?

The only way to be in the world of architecture is to think about everything, to relate every pieces of information, political, economic, social value, environment, animals, rain, sun, wind, and many more to create a perfectly comfortable, if not, artistic piece of building. Or it can be something more but never less.

For now do we even think of why architecture matters?

As a student in a local university, I often think of how the international architecture school works. Do they have the kind of system as we do? This is not to debate about the laws of university but we do not even have the freedom to be self-express of whom we really are. Always being limited to what we can or cannot wear. Does that even matter to the eyes of the young students? What does wearing what we want have to do with architecture anyways? I would say none but it does have effect to how we think. As I said earlier architecture is about the absolute way of thinking. How can we even think without first having the chance to express our-self?

I might not be the brightest student in my age of living but I have a lot of question. Ridiculous in many ways but still what is a question but to have a better understanding of a certain subject. Why is architecture dead?

A misconception of why does it even matter? To what sort of value must it reach to make it alive again? Towards what way can the values rises? This is not about the materials, the construction, the drawings, or the architect themselves. This is about the way we think. How do we even value something? From a student point of view towards another.

Part2

As I write this part of the story, I just got back from Bandung, Indonesia. I spent 4 days of nothing but such experience. What does architecture mean there, why does architecture there the way it is today? On what cause does it deliver, just cause by chance every parts of architecture is eventually destroying, and we as the architects destroy it by some means that it will eventually bring some meaningful story behind it. Though you might strongly rejects the destroying parts of architecture by saying the architects will always create, I strongly reject the point where we actually create something but instead destroying some parts and replacing it with something else.

Somewhere lays the words sustainable in the world of architecture nowadays. But let’s take a look in what way architecture are sustainable. On the way the site was picked, the way the studies was made, the tools used for making the design, the paper to draw, the lights and hours spent on the projects, the materials used way afar from the site, the construction of the building or just maybe the way it is used. On which part of it the sustainability tally with all the process, and as such is for the architect or maybe the politician to decide.

Somehow we forget what is important and what is not. The people, the money, or maybe the true form of art and science. We always, in our prime studies day talk about the people instead of the money but does that really happen? On which level do we really got to talk about our opinion instead we listen to someone else’s opinion. Some lacks the extra feel of enthusiasm towards the world of architecture.

The history being told said that the old architects of the world creates a building which resembles the god’s house, the palace of where lies eternal love, the undeniable perfection of art, the ultimate social place for the riches, the ever comfortable place to live under extreme weather condition, and many more but does that still exist in the modern architecture?

What does modern architecture lacks? The old architects were thinkers, are we not thinkers too? What kind of role model should we follow if we think the past thinkers are useless? Will there be any kind of thinkers acceptable if we really give a deep thought on what was said, given by the old humanity. I always doubt every speech given in any kind of form but never do I reject. As to reject is to not think, blindly denying everything and I myself will try ever so hard not to fall that low. As to not think makes you stupid in every way possible. But still it’s hard not to reject as we were thought to be that way.

Are we as students really are learning a dying subject of life matter? I am still a student but I shall say the only ultimate reason of which I love architecture is only because it makes me think more than before. The ultimate fun of it is when two minds collided, but never to reject, accepting every views of point, and at the end of the fun, the mind become not old or the same but a new. And as the process continues it will grow. No two minds will ever think alike in any way possible but as the thinkers think, eventually it will turn out to be the same in different ways.

Assalamualaikum
(waalaikumusalam)

setelah aku check semula..

ok .
next..

kalau aku, sekarang study kat uitm. sijil dari uitm ni diiktiraf oleh LAM (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia)
berita terbaru aku dapat dari lecturer aku hari tu , kiteorang diberitahu bila kite dah grad nanti, kite dapat Bachelor of Science (Hons) Architecture. kalau sebelum sebelum ni tak ada honours.

aku rase cukup gambar ni buat korang faham macam mana aliran arkitek dari uitm hingga ke part 2. kalau tak silap aku, part 2 ni equivalent dengan Master. after architectural practice, korang boleh la ambil part 3 (PhD)

insyaallah.. (kalau statement aku salah tentang ni maafkan aku yer)

oklah..kemudian aku nak story mory sikit perjalanan sepaaaaaaaanjaaaang belajar kat uitm sebagai pelajar seni bina ni..

14 minggu pertama - learning session
mingu ke 15 - submission portfolio
minggu ke 16 - study week
minggu ke 17 - examination weeks
minggu ke 19 - dah boleh balik. YEPPI!

lepas tu ,
kat uitm ni ade beberapa event setiap semester

ok? dah faham jadual tu?

mase semester 01, korang kene berkerjasama dengan senior, senior akan judge batch korang dari segi pemberian kerjasama. jadi, aku harap.. bakal2 pelajar senibina UiTM kenalah bagi kerjasama. kalau tak nanti, mase korang handle event ArchiDay, senior takkan tolong korang .. dan berjaya atau tidak Archiday korang tu akan menentukan nasib korang mase jadi senior,.. kalau korang berjaya, lecturer pun sayang korang. nak tahu sebab ape? arkitek ni, pekerjaan nye lebih kepada design dan design. jadi, dalam handle event nanti, korang sendiri kene design stage, invitation, tags, goodies , etc..

lagi kreatif korang, lagi laa berjaya event korang tu, ok. tak nak cerita banyak-banyak, nanti korang dah masuk, korang tahu lah macam mana cara handle event tuh.

Let me share what Prof Alan Bridges summed up during external examiner wrap-up session - "SketchUp should be banned from School of Architecture. Students are not making architecture, but students are making images (with SkectUp). Even Frank Gehry doesn't know to use computer and refuse to learn it (but still making impressive arechitecture)". Thing to ponder!
ok, yang ni lagi satu,.. korang takyah lah sebok-sebok nak design-design guna autocad or sketchup..
sebab kalau design thru semua ni, korang akan tersekat dengan grid grid komputer..bukan freely or originally from your own idea.. ok ada paham?

dan korang kena rajin datang studio. jangan banyak main ..nanti jadi kerja last minit.. tak best!
ok lah. aku rasa cukup sampai sini.. nah..
aku copy paste dari group department aku kat fb.

dalam entry seterusnya.. jangan juling masa baca nanti dah lah yer! ekeke

Living Islam In Real Life

Assalamualaikum
(waalaikumusalam)

How can I live as a Muslim and who are my examples?

this is a very important question for all muslims. there are many muslims today who have lost their morals and muslim character. To live life as a true muslim, mere lip service is not acceptable. You have to beleive in what you say. You cannot say one thing and do the opposite.
"do people think that they will be left alone upon saying, 'we beleive' and that they won't be  tested?" (29:2) surah Al-Ankabut :2
If you go back to the time of the Rasulullah s.a.w, you can see the sacrifices made  by the Sahaba. One  of them, Bilal ibn Rabah showed some of the greatest sacrifices. which is on one occasion ,Bilal's owner, Ummaya ibn Khalaf took Bilal out onto the hot sand and placed a heavy stone on his chest. Ummaya then tried to force him to renounce his faith in Islam. But Bilal would just repeat,

AHADUN AHAD! AHADUN AHAD!
(Allah is my god,He is One)

this shows the love of islam that the Sahaba had.Nothing was more important to them than their deen. Another example of sahaba who made sacrifices for the deen was the great Salman al Farsi. He grew up in a very wealthy family and was loved very much by his father. but this did not stop him from eventually finding islam. Salman fled his house in Persia, accepted Christianity, accopanied a caravan to syria, traveled around, journeyed with a group of Arabs and then was sold into slavery to a Jew, then he encountered the Prophet and accepted islam, all on his quest for learning the true Deen.

another important aspect in living life as a muslim is TAQWA. Taqwa is defined as allah consciousness or being aware of allah. this means that wherever you are,you know that Allah is always watching over you. Allah describes the people who have no taqwa as people who have forgotten their own souls and become rebellious transgressors.
"and dont be like those who forgot Allah, and He made them forget their own souls! those are rebellious wrong-doers" (59:19) surah Al-Hashr:19
the Prophet also once said
'Taqwa is the root of all wisdom'

there was a Sahaba by the name of Ibn Umar who used to cry very often in the fear of allah. as a result, his crying led him to near blindness. He said to someone watching him, "you wonder at my weeping. even the sun weeps with the fear of allah "
one another ocassion , he is reported to have said "even the mood weeps with the fear of allah"

to develope Taqwa certain points have to be practiced is :

Salah(solat)

one of the five pillars of islam and is extremely important. during the day it constantly reminds you of the Almighty Creator.
Salah is a form of Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and eventually helps to lead Taqwa
not only develope taqwa, it also washes away your sins.

Abu Hurairah heard Allah's Messenger say:
"if there was a river at the door of the (house) of one of you, and he bathed in it everyday five times, would you say any dirt would be left on him?"

everyone there said :
"no dirt would be left on him"

the Propest s.a.w continued :
"this is the example of the five prayers by which Allah washes away sins"
(bukhari)

as you can see,Salah is a major point of living life as a muslim. over all, living life the islamic way based on many different aspects. these aspects should be taken under consideration by every muslim, because every muslim doesn't necessarily lead life the islamic way.

the best examples to reflect living life the islamic way is in the examples of Sahaba and the Blesses Messenger. It is said in Surah Al-Ahzab:21

"you have indeed in the messenger of allah a beautiful pattern...." (33:21)
~FOLLOW THAT PATTERN AND YOU WILL BE A TRUE MUSLIM~
